Executive Fiala Urges All November Flood Victims to Register with FEMA

BINGHAMTON, NY - Broome County Executive Barbara J. Fiala says she is delighted and relieved that the Federal Emergency Management Agency has finally extended Individual Assistance to people in Broome County impacted by the November flash floods.

“Our residents had to wait too long but at least they now have somewhere to turn for some financial relief,” said Executive Fiala. “Many flood victims did not have enough money to repair the extensive damage caused by the freak storm on November 16th and many are still living in homes that suffered damage and have not been repaired yet.”

Fiala urges all residents to sign up for FEMA aid at 1-800-621-FEMA or register online at www.fema.gov.

FEMA advises that callers have the following information available to help speed up the application process:

  • Your current address and phone number;
  • The address of the damaged property;
  • Your Social Security number, if available;
  • A general list of damages and losses you suffered;
  • If insured, your insurance policy number, or the agent's and company name.

FEMA disaster assistance covers basic needs only and will not normally compensate you for your entire loss. If you have insurance, contact your insurance agent first. Then contact FEMA to register for assistance that may help pay for basic needs not covered under your insurance policy. Some disaster aid does not have to be paid back, while other forms of help may come in the form of loans. The FEMA representative will explain the details to you when you call.
